Memorial St. Nikolai – Landscape Design for Memory and Spatial Dignity

The redesign of the open space surrounding the St. Nikolai Memorial in Hamburg aims to create a respectful, atmospherically dense, and at the same time functional place of remembrance. The concept responds to the site’s significant historical and social relevance. Today preserved as a deliberate ruin, the former main church stands as a reminder of the destruction of the Second World War. Through a restrained and clearly structured landscape design approach, we developed an open space that reinforces the monument’s dignity, provides orientation for visitors, and opens up new opportunities for remembrance, learning, and lingering.

A Place of Remembrance: Sensitivity and Historical Significance

The St. Nikolai Memorial is one of Hamburg’s central places of remembrance and holds symbolic significance far beyond the city. As a ruin, it references war and destruction while simultaneously functioning as a place of learning and a public urban space.

The landscape design responds to this multidimensional character by creating a precise yet restrained spatial framework. The site remains open to individual perception and allows for both quiet reflection and collective use.

The Green Base - Spatial Framing and Urban Presence

At the heart of the design is the green base, which frames the memorial as a landscape plinth and strengthens its urban impact. Its oval footprint is clearly articulated, establishing a distinct hierarchy between monument and surroundings. Despite its precise geometry, the base retains a soft landscape character and ensures the memorial remains legible from a distance.

The planting concept consists of a diverse mix of low-growing perennials. It promotes biodiversity, creates habitat for pollinators, and remains sufficiently low to preserve unobstructed views of the church ruin. The seasonally changing vegetation introduces subtle vitality without disturbing the contemplative atmosphere.

Tree Structures and Spatial Transitions
To the northwest, the base opens into a light grove of trees that creates a pleasant microclimate and provides shade without obscuring the memorial’s silhouette. The selected tree species are climate-resilient and emphasize the spatial calm of this zone.
Toward the north, a structured row of trees forms the transition to the Hopfenmarkt. Smaller-growing species strike a balance between transparency and enclosure while subtly marking the access to the pavilion. This design builds on existing green connections and continues them in a contemporary, restrained language.

Quality of Stay Between Silence and Public Life
A key objective of the design is to enhance the quality of stay without compromising the memorial’s quiet character. The seating elements formally reference the design language of the Hopfenmarkt and are positioned along relevant sightlines, particularly toward the church tower. Additional seating along the tree rows provides places to wait or linger quietly away from heavily trafficked streets. This creates a balanced relationship between accessible urban space and protected, contemplative atmosphere.

Integration of Art and Expansion of the Learning Space

Existing artworks are integrated into the new open space structure. The sculpture “Erdengel” is relocated to the northwest area of the base, where it accentuates the spatial axis through the tower and provides an additional point of orientation.

The church walls remain the primary carriers of exhibition content, complemented by subtle information panels positioned between vertical steles. These exhibition elements are discreetly embedded into the space and reinforce the memorial’s role as a place of learning and remembrance.

An Open Space Between Remembrance, Learning, and Encounter
The landscape strategy aims to make the memorial tangible both as a historically charged place of remembrance and as an open urban space. By balancing nature and built heritage, spatial clarity and atmospheric restraint, we created an open space that honors the site’s significance while enabling new forms of shared remembrance, learning, and lingering.
